Saturday Market

I went to the market with Auntie Sherry and Uncle Azad in West Coast Demerara this past Saturday.  They had everything ranging from fruit & veggies, to fish & ducks, to clothes and canned/boxed goods.  Below are a bunch of photos I took of the market.  I think the photo-taking must have alerted people that I was "a foreigner", because when we were walking through the fish section, someone behind us yelled "American! American! American!".  So much for blending in....

Donkey Cart

As requested, photos of a donkey cart!

Yeah, I did that too...  ; )

Comments!!!

I fiddled with the settings, and I think I was able to set it so that anyone can leave a comment!  Please, give it a try and let me know if it works!  I would love to hear what you think of the photos and such!  Miss you!

P.S. Please remember to sign your name after your comment.  Otherwise, I have no idea who you are!

Vehicles of Guyana

I wanted to give you a feel of what the transportation is like in Guyana, so here are a few photos of the vehicles that passed by Auntie Sherry's and Uncle Azad's.

Yup, this one of the buses I mentioned before.  Behind the driver are four rows of seats usually crammed with people.  The fare depends on how far you are going.  The fare from the ferry stelling where the speed boat drops you off to Auntie Sherry's is 100 GYD (0.50 USD).  The bus from Auntie Fiona's to Georgetown is also 100 GYD.  A taxi from Auntie Fiona's to Georgetown is 1,000 GYD (5 USD), so I need to learn to take the bus by myself... I've done it once, but I'm still not certain about where I need to get off...

Auntie Sherry and Uncle Azad's

I spent the weekend by Auntie Sherry (Dad's sister) and Uncle Azad's.  They are very friendly and eager to show me around.  Below are some photos of their home and its view.

Front of the house

View from the front veranda.  Across the street are the homes of squatters, and beyond them and the trees is the seawall.  There is a constant sea breeze, and it is very lovely.

View from the back door.  Uncle Azad is standing on the driveway looking up at one of their apartments.

"Fun Day" with Auntie Fiona

On Thursday, October 25th I spent the day with Auntie Fiona and the children she teaches at Better Hope Nursery School.  They were having "Fun Day", which is similar to the "Field Days" I use to have in DE schools.  The kids participate in various races and parents come to help with scoring and the food stand.  Fun Day was held in the community center's field behind the school.  It was very hot, but the kids had so much energy!  Below are some photos of the kids.

On the left is the food stand where parents sold snack and drinks.  The kids are in the middle, and the mini track is on the right.

And off they go!

There were some goats on the edge of the field, but no one seemed to mind.

Is there no place she hasn't explored?!
